MONTREAL - Sidney Crosby says linemate Pascal Dupuiss secret weapon is his
knuckle puck.
Authentic Roddy White Jersey . Whatever its
called, it worked as Dupuis drilled a shot from outside on the left circle and
saw it dip, go off goaltender Carey Prices glove and drop into the net to break
a tie and give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens
on Thursday night. Hes got a great shot, weve seen it a few times, said Crosby.
If it knuckles, you cant really blame Price. It was moving everywhere. The
Dupuis goal at 13:21 of the third period helped the Penguins end a two-game
winless run and eke out a one-goal victory in a game they otherwise dominated,
outshooting Montreal 41-21. Sergei Gonchar also scored, with an assist from
Dupuis, and set up a Matt Cooke goal for the Penguins (21-10-1). The puck was on
edge, but I tried to shoot it as hard as I can, said Dupuis. If the goalie
doesnt know where it is, thats good. The game ended with the Bell Centre crowd
of 21,273 booing as only 1:13 after the Dupuis goal, referee Chris Lees quick
whistle nullified what could have been the tying goal by Montreals Scott Gomez
in a goalmouth scramble. Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury thought he had the puck
covered, but it was loose and Gomez slid it in only to have it waved off.
Montreal coach Jacques Martin, whose team ended a three-game winning streak,
measured his words. Thats the rule - if the referee intends to whistle, the play
is dead, he said. The puck was there but theres nothing you can do. Gomez said:
Maybe he blew it a little quick, but you dont want to be in that situation. Im
not going to say anything bad about the refs. Theyve got a job to do and they do
it well. Call it mistake or what, but these things happen. Matt DAgostini and
Roman Hamrlik scored for Montreal (15-15-2), which was kept in the game by
Prices strong play in the net, opportunistic goals and another effective
performance by the penalty killers. The Canadiens killed five Pittsburgh power
plays and have now killed 27 in a row over the last six games. Defenceman Josh
Gorges decried the number of penalties the Canadiens have been taking. Their 156
minor penalties this season is second only to Philadelphias 162, although their
relatively few major penalties has them 12th in the league at 12.9 penalty
minutes per game. Were taking way too many penalties - its killing us, said
Gorges. Our penalty killers are doing a great job, but were spending way too
much time in our own end. Theyre building energy and were wasting energy.
Turnovers lead to penalties. Weve got to clean up our game. We were in it, but
weve got to play a lot better. The Penguins improved to 3-0 against Montreal,
after wins at home of 6-1 and 3-1 earlier in the season. It was a fast-paced
first period with end-to-end rushes by both clubs but only one goal, as Crosby
played decoy at the side of the net while Gonchar sneaked in off the point to
slap in a feed from Bill Guerin at 6:38. A Montreal penalty had just ended when
DAgostini jumped onto the ice, poked the puck off Jordan Staals stick and fired
in his second goal, and first since Oct. 24, high to the stick side on Fleury
10:48 into the second. It was Montreals first shot of the period. Hamrliks point
shot got through traffic for Montreals fourth power-play goal in the last three
games at 13:38. Marc-Andre Bergeron picked up his fourth point in three games on
the goal. Pittsburgh tied it with 2:15 left in the period as Gonchars wrist shot
changed direction off Cooke and beat Price. Evgeni Malkin put a shot off the
crossbar from the slot in the opening minute of the third. Notes: The Canadiens
recalled defenceman Yannick Weber from AHL Hamilton but didnt use him.
...Jaroslav Spacek, who hurt his right knee Tuesday in Ottawa, was able to play.
He was listed with 11 turnovers in the game, while no other player had more than
three... D Paul Mara sat out with a shoulder injury. ... Montreal sent Benoit
Pouliot to Hamilton for conditioning. He was acquired Nov. 23 from Minnesota for
Guillaume Latendresse but has yet to play for the Canadiens. ... Alex Goligoski
returned for Pittsburgh after missing 10 of the last 11 games with a groin
injury. Chris Kunitz remains out with a lower body injury. ...Eric Godard played
his 300th NHL game.

YORK - As Citigroup Inc.s shares sank to 13-year lows below $9 a share, the bank
denied a report Thursday that it is looking for a new chairman. Any report that
the board is searching for a new chairman is false, said Citigroup spokeswoman
Christina Pretto. Vikram Pandit The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday,
citing people familiar with the matter, that some Citigroup board members are
increasingly dissatisfied with the companys performance and are considering
replacing Chairman Sir Win Bischoff. The board named Bischoff chairman in
December after ousting former CEO and Chairman Charles Prince. Citigroups board
issued a statement Thursday that it reiterated its full support for the companys
chairman and looks forward to his continued leadership. The board called
Thursdays Wall Street Journal report completely erroneous. Citigroup, which has
suffered four straight quarters of losses due to bad bets on mortgages and other
deteriorating loans, has seen its stock plunge to the lowest levels since May
1995. Shares fell 19 cents, or 2 percent, to $9.45 Thursday, and traded as low
as $8.27 earlier in the day. Investors have gotten increasingly nervous that
Citigroup lacks strong enough leadership to pull the company out of a mess of
souring consumer loans and highly leveraged investments. CEO Vikram Pandit,
while well-respected as an investment banker, never led a public company before
taking Citigroups reins in December. And the banks board has little
financial-services expertise, with the exception of Robert Rubin, a Treasury
secretary under President Bill Clinton, who has said since joining Citi in 1999
that he does not want to run the bank. A leading candidate for the chairman
position, the Journal said, is Citigroup board member Richard Parsons -- Time
Warner Inc.s chairman, who is part of President-elect Barack Obamas transition
economic advisory board. Parsons was chief executive and chairman of Dime
Bancorp, a thriftt bank, in the early 1990s.
Black Buster Posey Jersey. But some analysts
doubt this experience in banking would be enough to lead Citi, the most troubled
of the four largest US banks back to financial health. You need somebody whos
done workout, somebodys whos dealt with a troubled institution. Ultimately, you
might have to break it up anyway, said Christopher Whalen, managing director of
Institutional Risk Analytics. If you get the right person, it could be
enormously helpful. But I just think its kind of late. Bart Narter, a bank
analyst at consulting and research firm Celent, said replacing the chairman
would be an important symbolic move, but that putting a new captain on the oil
tanker doesnt mean its going to turn any faster. The Journal also reported that
Citigroup is in talks to buy the Maryland regional bank Chevy Chase Bank.
Citigroups Pretto declined to comment on the matter. A message left with a Chevy
Chase Bank official was not immediately returned. Last month, Citigroup lost out
on a deal to buy the much larger bank Wachovia Corp. Wells Fargo & Co.
nabbed the Charlotte, North Carolina-based bank instead. After releasing its
third-quarter results last month, Chief Financial Officer Gary Crittenden said
in an interview with The Associated Press that when it comes to acquisitions, we
would continue to look, and see, obviously, what happens. But it would need to
meet some pretty strict criteria. Analysts have been less sure, however, that
Citi should be ** acquisitions. Citi shouldnt be buying anything right now.
They should be battening down the hatches, Whalen said. Chevy Chase Bank has $11
billion in deposits, according to data from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.,
and nearly 300 offices in the metropolitan area surrounding Washington, D.C.
Celents Narter said that arguably, now is a great time to be buying banks. But
for Citigroup, he said, given all the other issues they have, I dont know if Id
be focusing on an acquisition right now. ' ' '
